Crowd Pleaser

Very few coins get collectors as hot under the collar as The Gothic Crown. The original from 1847 is commanding upwards of £10,000 for even the the lowest MS grades. It would seem that the rally is never going to end on this coin, however, as we all know from financial markets at one point the music always stops. In order to satisfy this enthusiasm The Royal Mint released The Gothic Crown in two parts, Portrait and Quartered Arms. This was available in various weights of silver and gold with the 2oz variant of both being the most popular.

Market Performance

Since their release collectors have been frantically grading in order to achieve the lauded 70UCAM grade. It would see that in the secondary market these coins continue to perform well. The first 2oz gold Quartered Arms to break cover sold for around £14,000 at Heritage Auctions, since this prices have pulled back slightly and the coins are trading around £8500-10,000 now. In the long run this pair could be an extremely good hold. The most popular coin design arguably in the world in an increasingly popular format. Regardless it is still a profit on the initial RRP.

Plain Edge

As any collector knows the original gothic crown was struck mainly with an UNDECIMO edge but around 5% had a plain edge. Following the success of the milled release The Royal Mint have released a plain edge 2oz gold version to Platinum Mint Marque clients. This is an edition of 125 and as such has attracted significant interest from collectors. Trading currently around £12000 - 14000 there is a clear premium over the standard milled edge. This was the first of the Platinum exclusives this year with the 5 coin sovereign set being released as a pattern proof piedfort set to Platinum Mint Marque customers only (Limit - 70).

Into the Future

It really is anyones guess as to how the market will develop on these coins. The market for the original 1847 gothic crown shows no signs of stopping, however, the market on modern coins has become somewhat stagnant of late. In reality these coins are incredible collectors items in tiny mintages, they should always do well. Our position is that long term these coins should do extremely well.
